ISLAMIC FASHION GOES STYLISH IN INDONESIA
[Reuters, 11/29/2010]
Long known as feminine and demure, Indonesia's traditional kebaya is headed for a makeover at the hands of innovative designers. Growing demand for stylish yet still modest fashions in the world's most populous Islamic nation is helping power efforts to bring Islamic fashion into the modern age, a movement symbolized by changes to the iconic kebaya, a blouse-dress combination. Fun prints, intricate detailing, colors so bold as to be psychedelic and a mix of delicate lace all graced the catwalk at the recent Jakarta Fashion Week. One designer even paired the kebaya with red-and-yellow striped tights. "I think it's a good presentation because if you wear Muslim clothing like this, it's not necessarily boring," Jakarta Fashion Week project manager Petty Fatimah told Reuters. "You can definitely expect to see more Islamic fashion in the future and it is for everybody. If you're not a woman who wears Islamic clothing you can still wear it." In a nod to local mores, U.S. First Lady Michelle Obama donned a headscarf on her visit to Jakarta's Istiqlal mosque earlier this month. But wearing the headscarf is not mandatory and regulations concerning clothing are fairly liberal save for Indonesia's West Aceh district, which is the sole upholder of sharia — or Islamic — law. Themed "Styling Modernity," models in kebaya outfits launched Jakarta's third Fashion Week earlier this month, with 16 selected designers putting their own spin on the garment. Other collections, with titles such as "Romantic Return," "Garden Luxury" and "Catch Your Eyes," featured billowy ankle length dresses, harem-style pants and tunic suits which still complied with Islamic clothing norms. Keeping stylish fashion in line with Islamic norms isn't just a gesture for traditionalists, Petty Fatimah noted.

VERSACE FAMILY RETURN STOLEN PAINTING TO ORIGINAL OWNERS
[Reuters, 11/29/2010]
A painting stolen from a London home in 1979 and which ended up in the collection of late Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace has been returned to its original owners, Britain's Art Loss Register said on Monday, November 22, 2010. The work by 18th century German artist Johann Zoffany had been billed as the star lot in a Sotheby's auction of the contents of Versace's Lake Como villa last year, but it was withdrawn at the last moment. A direct descendent of the subject of "Portrait of Major George Maule" contacted the Art Loss Register, which tracks lost and stolen art and antiquities, and the ALR in turn contacted Sotheby's. "What could have been a protracted legal battle between two very well financed European families and their copious sets of lawyers has been amicably settled by the Art Loss Register's art mediation team," the ALR said. Although the terms of the settlement between the two families remained confidential, the ALR's Christopher Marinello said: "There is no doubt that Gianni Versace had no knowledge that this painting was stolen when he purchased it in the 1980s. "This portrait does ... hold particular sentimental value to the ... heirs and the Versace family were extremely gracious in their willingness to compromise in seeing its return."

RAVIZZA COURTS RUSSIA WITH LIGHTWEIGHT FUR
[Reuters, 11/29/2010]
Italian fur designer Simonetta Ravizza is hoping to carve a niche in Russia's fashion market by offering lightweight fur in bold colors in a country more accustomed to heavy, old-fashioned fur coats. Ravizza, an heir to her family business, has opened a boutique at the Moscow's plush TSUM department store in the capital of the world's fourth-largest luxury market.  Although Ravizza has been selling her fur in 40 cities in Russia and Ukraine for five years, this is her first permanent boutique. "Her fur may not offer much warmth, but it is very aristocratic," said actress Ekaterina Drobysh, 28, eyeing a black goat coat with three-quarter sleeves. Russia's love affair with the indispensible winter wear is centuries-old in Russia where temperatures regularly plummet to minus 30 Celsius (-22 Fahrenheit). The fur industry seems to be undergoing a renaissance in global fashion. Insiders say it is no longer frowned upon to wear sable jackets or mink earmuffs. For the autumn/winter 2010/2011 catwalk shows more than half the designers used fur, in forms and shapes that were both traditional and daring — fur covered heads, hands, bodies and legs.
